It's the New Year! Hopefully, it will be a better one for me than the last.
I ushered in the NY by working. So fun right? At least it's better than squeezing through the crowds in Orchard Rd on NY eve and being molested by Bangala workers. Not fun at all.
I worked at a VVIP function unveiling the new Windsor Ballroom at GWP. It's super super nice and huge and NEW. Way better than the old ballroom. Hehe. Getting sick of the tight space over there, no more squeezing through chairs for me. I wonder what it will be like to work there in the future. Just not for Western lunches or dinners, they are much too troublesome. The money's very easy to earn though.
Of course, important functions like these calls for special attention to the set up so we had to start work very early. Reached the palce at 10 in the morning and spent the whole afternoon folding napkins and filling up the salt and pepper shakers with Xiao Hui. So sick of looking at napkins le. Imagine having to fold 300 of them in a afternoon, it's a miracle I didn't scream bloody murder after 2 hours of it.
Everything that was used that day was brand new, even the staff. Hehe. Well, technically none of us had worked there beforehand so for the first time in a long, long while I'm as much of a newbie as the rest! Haha, everyone still asks me where stuff are kept though, I'm just as clueless as they are. We had lots of time on our hands, since the function is so important that everyone had to reach there super early. The latest person started work at 2 pm! The briefing alone lasted for 2 hours. ~Sweat~ There was a lot of spare time left over and so we indulged Xiao Hui with her favourite activity for once: photo taking and video shooting. Heh. She's one very happy girl that day. All these done using camera phones of course, none of us have the desire to be sued by the hotel.
Everything that was on the menu that day was good stuff. I'm not talking about shark's fin and abalone. Those are so passe. Get this: they had crab and lobster for appetizer, chicken essence with some ingredients I can't recall, foie gras, lime sorbet, veal or halibut(some kind of fish) and some really awful dessert. Yeah, I know the dessert's awful cause I tasted it. Shh... Don't tell anyone it was Ron who did the stealing, not me. Wahaha.
As with all Western dinners, we were assigned individual tables and grouped accordingly. And I'm really damn suay, got paired with Xiaodi and Ron. I don't think there's anything working with the former but with Ron? Hai... It's hard to tell which one of us is more angry with the turn of events at that point. Working with the both of them was ok, except Xiaodi's more easily distracted by stuff than Ron. He ended up being very pissed cause Xiaodi would run off to do some other random stuff. Not that I mind, the part about him running off anyway. My table turned up pretty late so I had no problems covering for him. Then again, I wasn't the one who had to do more work. The guests at both Ron and my table were very funny though, they kept calling Ron to my table and vice versa. We both ended up doing more stuff for each other's table than for our own. Heh. All of them are very nice though, taking into account that they paid more than 700 bucks individually to attend the gala dinner(!)
IMO, the lead up to the dying minutes of 2005 was pretty good. The band that played and the singers - some famous 70s group called the 3 degrees, was fantastic. I actually liked some of their songs despite not being around during that era. Granted, I had to endure the horrendous soundcheck all afternoon. Where else could I go?
Because of the festive mood and all, some of the staff got drunk. Yes, you read right, STAFF got drunk. Ron and Mr. Hotshot Lawyer drank A LOT of alcohol just before the countdown. While seeing York drunk is fairly entertaining, watching Ron was NOT. If possible, he's more of an ass than usual. He kept popping the bloody balloons next to most of the girls, but mostly me, according to Xiao Hui. Stupid idiot. Hell, I was bloody pissed. So pissed in fact, I yelled at him in front of all the staff in the new ballroom. What a way to start 2006.
